Your adventure begins in Tobermory, a picturesque fishing village on the north-east coast of Mull, where you will be welcomed on board by your Skipper and Guide for the day. After a quick safety briefing - and an all-important cup of tea - the lines are cast, and we're off.

As we leave Tobermory Bay, your Guide will offer a short presentation to introduce a variety of species that we might hope to encounter. Not only will you learn what to look for when spotting whales and dolphins, but you'll also get a sense of how the wider ecosystem fits together.

The coastal waters of Tobermory and the Sound of Mull are an ideal habitat for seals and harbour porpoise, and for coastal seabirds such as shags and black guillemots. This is also where we have our best chance of spotting a white-tailed eagle - Britain's largest bird of prey with a wingspan well over 2 metres.

As we continue into the Sea of the Hebrides, our horizon opens up and we begin our search for larger beasties in earnest. Minke whales, basking sharks and common dolphins all visit these waters throughout the season to feed. Our cues are often taken from seabirds. Gannets, shearwaters and auks - all fascinating in their own right - but whose presence is also a sure sign of food in the area.

We will take a short break mid-day in one of our favourite anchorages, where you can enjoy your lunch in the (noisy) tranquility of nesting terns and curious seals.

As we return to Tobermory in the late afternoon we hope you will have enjoyed a fulfilling and relaxing day on the water...with lots of memories and photographs to cherish, and to remind you of just how special the Hebrides is.

Research

We use our time on the water to collect valuable information, which goes towards the conservation of Scotland's seas. Every sighting is recorded and shared with the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust. They use this data, together with that collected from their research vessel, Silurian. We also try to take identification photos of many of the creatures we encounter. To date, over 200 individual minke whales have been recorded in the waters around Mull.

What's Included

  • Expert guiding from passionate and knowledgeable marine biologists
  • Ethical and natural wildlife encounters
  • Small groups of up to 12 passengers
  • Led by an experienced Skipper
  • Complimentary hot drinks & refreshments
  • Sea Wild Scotland Guarantee (see below)(see opposite)

Our Guarantee

The creatures we hope to find are wild and free - exactly how it should be - so despite our best efforts, sightings can never be guaranteed. Nevertheless, we understand how disappointing it is if we aren't fortunate enough to have an encounter. That is why we offer you the chance to join us again free of charge if we're unable to find anything the first time around.

Our guarantee covers everything that we would normally call a whale, dolphin or shark...unless we see at least one of those you'll receive a voucher to try again.
